A linen tester is a small folding magnifier with a measuring scale built into its base. It was first made for counting threads in linen, which is where the name comes from. Today it is a precision inspection tool used across textiles, printing, photography, and quality control.

How a linen tester works

The magnifier folds flat for the pocket and opens into a stand that holds the lens at exactly the right focal height above the surface. A fine scale, usually marked in millimetres, sits on the base plate. You read the magnified detail and measure it against the scale at the same time.

Counting threads and measuring print

In textiles, a linen tester counts threads per inch or centimetre to grade fabric quality. In printing, it measures dot patterns, registration, and screen rulings. In photography, it checks film and print detail. The built-in scale is what separates it from a plain loupe.

Magnification range

Most linen testers run from 6x to 10x, which is the sweet spot for measuring work. Strong enough to resolve threads and dots, wide enough to keep the scale and the detail in view together. Some specialist models go higher for fine screen work.

Who uses linen testers

  • Textile buyers and quality controllers grading fabric.
  • Printers checking dot gain, registration, and screen rulings.
  • Photographers and archivists inspecting film and prints.
  • Stamp and banknote collectors examining fine detail.

Choosing a linen tester

Look for a solid metal frame, a glass lens, and a clearly etched scale in the units you work in. A folding design protects the lens and makes it easy to carry. For most textile and print work, a 6x or 8x model with a millimetre scale covers the job.
