Stereo Microscopes

Stereo microscopes that show real objects in 3D at lower power. For dissection, repair, hobbies, and inspection.

A stereo microscope shows solid objects in three dimensions at lower magnification, usually 10x to 80x. Unlike a compound microscope, you do not need thin slides. You look at real things, a coin, a circuit board, an insect, a flower, and see them in natural 3D depth.

How a stereo microscope differs from a compound

A compound microscope uses one optical path at high power to view thin, light-passing slides. A stereo microscope uses two separate optical paths, one for each eye, giving a 3D view of solid objects with light bouncing off the surface. Different jobs, different tools.

What stereo microscopes are used for

  • Dissection and biology of whole specimens.
  • Electronics repair, soldering, and PCB inspection.
  • Jewellery, watch, and coin work.
  • Stamp grading and collectible inspection.
  • Geology, botany, and entomology hobby work.

Magnification range

Most stereo microscopes run 10x to 40x, with some reaching 80x. This is plenty for surface detail on solid objects. You are not looking at cells here, you are examining and working on things you can hold. Lower power means a wide field of view and easy focus.

Working distance and lighting

Stereo microscopes have a generous working distance, so there is room to use tools under the lens. Good lighting matters. Look for models with both top (incident) and bottom (transmitted) LED so you can light solid objects from above and translucent ones from below.

Choosing a stereo microscope

For repair and hobby work, a 10x to 40x stereo microscope with dual LED lighting and a solid stand covers most needs. If you mainly inspect flat objects, a fixed magnification is fine. For varied work, choose a zoom model that changes power smoothly.
