When you search for a magnifying glass with light, you are looking for one of five different products. Each is best at a different job. Picking the right one saves frustration and money.

Hand-held LED magnifiers

For mail, prescriptions, recipe cards, and quick reading. The light shines through the lens onto the page. Compact, portable, runs on batteries or USB. Brand picks include MagniPros, Optima Dart, and EziVue.

Stand magnifiers with LED

Sit over the page hands-free. Best for longer reading or hobby work. Some have spot lenses inside the main lens for higher magnification on a single point. Equipoise and Optica do the strongest range here.

Headband and head-mounted LED magnifiers

Both hands free, light beam points where your eyes look. Used for embroidery, jewellery making, model building, electronics repair. Most include 1x to 6x interchangeable lenses and a hinged flip-up frame.

Magnifying lamps

Floor or workbench-mounted with a large lens and high-output LED ring. Designed for ongoing tasks rather than quick reading. Great for craft rooms, repair workshops, makeup application.

Pocket LED magnifiers

Small enough for a handbag. Use for restaurant menus, shop labels, travel reading. Folding pocket magnifiers with USB charging are the most popular travel option.

How much magnification do I need

For general reading, 2x to 4x. For fine print, 5x to 7x. For hobby or inspection, 10x or above. Going stronger than you need actually makes things harder because the field of view shrinks.

LED vs daylight vs nothing

LED magnifiers cut shadows and improve contrast. Daylight magnifiers, which have no built-in light, rely on your room lighting. If you struggle in dimly lit lounges or under yellow bulbs, LED is worth the small extra cost.
