A magnifying lamp combines a large lens with a bright light on an adjustable arm. It clamps to a desk or stands on the floor, lights your work, and enlarges it, leaving both hands free. For any task that takes more than a few minutes, it beats holding a magnifier.

How a magnifying lamp works

A wide lens sits inside a ring of LED light at the end of an articulating arm. You position it over your work and it stays put. The light shines through and around the lens, removing shadow and lifting contrast, while the lens enlarges what you are looking at.

What magnifying lamps are used for

  • Craft and hobby. Embroidery, model building, painting, beading.
  • Beauty. Lash work, brows, nails, skin treatments.
  • Electronics. Soldering, repair, inspection.
  • Reading and writing. Long sessions where a handheld tires the hand.

Magnification, measured in dioptres

Lamp magnification is often given in dioptres. A 3-dioptre lens is roughly 1.75x, 5-dioptre about 2.25x, and 8-dioptre around 3x. For general work, 3 to 5 dioptres gives a comfortable, wide view. Higher dioptre lenses magnify more but cover a smaller area.

LED lighting and colour

Modern magnifying lamps use LED rings that run cool and last for years. Look for adjustable brightness, and for beauty or colour work, adjustable colour temperature so you can match daylight. Even, ring-shaped light is what removes shadow across the whole lens.

Clamp, floor, or table

Clamp models fix to a desk edge and save bench space. Floor-standing models roll where you need them, good for treatment rooms and reading chairs. Table models sit on a weighted base. Pick the mount that fits where the work happens.
