Prismatic spectacles, often called bed prism glasses, use angled prisms to bend your line of sight by 90 degrees. Lie flat on your back, look straight up through the glasses, and you see straight ahead, a book on your chest, a TV at the foot of the bed. No neck strain, hands free.

How prism glasses work

The lenses contain prisms that redirect light through a right angle. Your eyes point upward toward the ceiling, but the image you see is whatever lies in front of you at chest or foot level. The effect feels strange for a minute, then becomes natural.

Who prismatic spectacles help

They were designed for people who must lie flat or find sitting up painful. Recovery after surgery, back and neck conditions, limited mobility, or simply reading comfortably in bed without propping up. They let you read, watch, and use a device while lying completely flat.

Common uses

  • Reading in bed without holding the book up.
  • Watching TV while lying flat.
  • Recovery and bed rest after surgery or injury.
  • Neck and back conditions that make looking down painful.

What to expect

Prism glasses take a few minutes to adjust to, since the redirected view is unusual at first. They are for lying flat, not for walking around. Many fit over existing prescription glasses, so you keep your normal correction while reading horizontally.

Choosing prismatic spectacles

Look for a comfortable, lightweight frame and clear prisms. If you wear prescription glasses, check the prism spectacles fit over them. They are a simple, inexpensive aid that makes flat-on-your-back reading and viewing genuinely comfortable.
